Entries organize written forms; senses carry meaning. Homographs and idioms remain readable because unrelated meanings do not share one flattened neighborhood.

A mast is part of sailing equipment, not a synonym of sailing. Every result keeps its relationship and a human explanation.

Dictionaries are excellent once you have a headword. Thesauruses are useful once you have a nearby word. Onomasio adds another starting point: the meaning, role, scene, part, or field you can describe but cannot yet name.
